Sayonara mataitsuka:
Sayonara means goodbye, and mataitsuka means (see you) again someday. The title reflects an emotion of saying goodbye to people, landscapes and family’s belongings. I hope to see them again someday, but I know it will probably be difficult. (Saori Parry, 2024)

Hoozuki lantern plants and welcome home, Relief print and hand colouring on paper, 14 x 14 cm, 2023
About the work:
During the event of Obon in Japan, it is believed that the souls of the deceased family members come back home. Hoozuki lantern plants are popular as offerings to assist in guiding the souls. I was thinking of their journey home whilst making the work. (Saori Parry, 2023)

The print studio that I am a member of is hosting an event OPEN HAUS on Sunday 4th July 2021 12-4pm. There will be an afternoon of free printmaking workshops run by SLAUGHTERHAUS artists. No experience necessary. All workshop places must be booked. Numbers will be restricted for Covid safety. My practice is to explore the uncertainty of existence and capture its unsettling feeling that echoes within objects.
I made a set of works in 2018, inspired by the items which belonged to the people who lost their lives in the Japanese earthquake in 2011. The items were unsettling to look at, but I felt closer to them and wanted to celebrate the lives that the items had witnessed.
My latest works, ‘The time traveller’ and ‘Hide and seek’, were triggered by this experience and I took a new approach to look at a hint of warmth/hope/fun in uncertain situation.
For The time traveller, I was thinking of a dream like scene from a story book. A traveller landed on an open space and started having a wander. For Hide and seek, I was imagining of hiding in a soft toy of dinosaur to play hide-and-seek. One is to explore the unknown world on my own, and another is to hide from people. It is interesting to me that both situations seem to contain a mixed feeling of anxiety and hope towards the situation.
I enjoyed making these works, especially experimenting the colours. I will upload different colour versions of these works on this page near the future.
